Djibouti Political Parties



The political system of Djibouti is the restricted Democratic Practice. Djibouti is a one party dominant State. People’s Rally for Progress or PRP is a major party in Djibouti and is in power currently. There are currently a number of political parties in Djibouti out of, which some are in the opposition.

The government-supportive Djibouti political parties include:

  • People’s Rally for Progress
  • National Democratic Party
  • Front for Restoration of Unity and Democracy
  • Union of Reform Partisans
  • Social Democratic People’s Party

The Anti Government Djibouti Political parties include:

  • Republican Alliance for Democracy
  • Djibouti Union for Democracy and Justice
  • Djibouti Party for Development
  • Movement for Democratic Renewal and Development

After independence of Djibouti in 1977 and between 1992, Djibouti was a single party state. The People’s Rally for Progress Party dominated the political scenario since independence and is currently led by the current President Ismail Omar Guelleh. The party along with Front for the Restoration of Unity and Democracy formed a coalition and contested for the 1999 election of the President. The history of politics in Djibouti has a number of instances, where political parties of Djibouti formed coalition. Though the opposition parties contest for the elections, they have hardly got chance of gaining power.
