Djibouti National Assembly



The Djibouti National Assembly represents the legislative branch of the government of Djibouti. It is a unicameral one and consists of only one functional parliamentary chamber.

The Djibouti National Assembly consists of a total of 65 parliamentarians. The National Assembly of Djibouti reflects the varied ethnic electorate of the east African country. A mixture of the principal two tribes of the east African country- Issa and Afar can be seen in the Djibouti National Assembly. The Somali origin Issa tribe has a representation of 21 legislative members. The Afar tribe has strength of 30 members. The remaining seats are held by minor tribes of the Somali origin.

The prominent political force in the Djibouti National Assembly is held by a coalition of political parties led by the dominant People’s Rally for Progress or PRP. The People’s Rally for Progress or PRP is currently led by President of Djibouti- Ismail Omar Guelleh. Other members of the political coalition include the Front for the Restoration of Unity and Democracy or FRUD. The FRUD is the party of the native Afar tribe of Djibouti. The Djibouti National Assembly is subjected to political oversight by the Djibouti Constitution. The Constitution of Djibouti portrays an influence of the French Constitution. France was the former colonial power in the east African region.
