Weather and Climate in Austria



The climate and weather of Austria are greatly influenced by the Alps. There are high peaks and deep-cut valleys and as a result, the climate is greatly influenced by altitude and location.

Autumn and spring in the Alpine valleys are warm and dry due to a dry wind foehn which flows at this time. The temperature rises due to this wind and people can suffer from headaches, irritability, and circulatory problems. The foggy weather becomes rare due to this wind. Fohn is sometimes responsible for melting the snow in the Alps and avalanches can take place. This wind brings a sudden change in temperature and the temperature can rise by 10 degree Celsius.

Austria experiences continental weather in the eastern part. Low pressure is formed in summer and the winters are followed by cold and dry wind. Austria also experiences a temperate climate due to the Mediterranean high systems.

The extreme northern and southern part of Austria experiences the continental weather of Europe. There is a considerable dip in the temperature due to the cold winds of Eastern Europe. Southern Austria has a warmer climate compared to the climate of the other parts. This part has a Mediterranean climate.
