There’s a jingle to its name and oodles of beauty in its sandy shoreline. This seaside town in Mauritius has arguably the finest beach in the island. An array of nature parks and golf courses, gives travelers enough scope to while away time in this beach destination. You also get a glimpse of the Peninsula of Le Morne Brabant, a quaint seaside town affording spectacular views of the Indian Ocean.

History

The seaside town was discovered first in the 18th century by Dutch explorers who got enamored by the sandy shorelines of Flic en Flac. The name of this town is a corruption of the old Dutch phrase ‘Fried Landt Flaak’, which means ‘Free and Flat Land.’

Things to Do in Flic en Flac

Indulge in Water Sports – When you are in the beach, it’s hard to resist the call of water sports. Top native and European operators on the beach have a minimum of three dives scheduled per day. Apart from diving and swimming, the island is particularly renowned for fishing and boat trips to Îlot Gabriel and Île Aux Cerfs.

Raise a Toast at KenziBar – This is the ideal place to get a taste of local vintage with fire-spewing torches, exotic rum punch, and live music. Shotz, a lounge bar and nightclub, caters to upscale guests.

Try Golfing – Designed by Wright, the 18-hole Tamarina Golf Course is a treat for connoisseurs of the sport. It is located on a lush 206-hectare land on Tamarin Bay, and is famous for its spectacular views of Mt. Rempart and the surrounding mountain range.

Explore Casela World of Adventures – Further down the main road is a 14-hectare delight – the Casela World of Adventures. It is a fun world designed to enthrall tourists. Beautifully landscaped venue with a variety of exotic flora and fauna, Casela World also sets the traveler’s heart pumping with difficult suspension bridges, zip lines, and hiking spots hidden in mysterious canyons. The quad-bike safaris take the traveler around the Yemen Reserve, which is home to fruit bats, monkeys, wild pigs, and deer.

Embark on a Sightseeing Tour – Take day trips to Black River Gorges National Park and Tamarind Falls, where you can enjoy hiking, canyoning, and other outdoor activities.

Go Shopping – When you are in town, you are never far away from a store that sells souvenirs, local artifacts, and collectibles. The Cascavelle Shopping Mall is the right place to shop for souevnirs.

Near the south end of Flic en Flac beach in Tamarin, Big Willy’s is a sought-after place among party animals for clubbing and party-scenes. In addition to that, there are two casinos near the beach in Pasadena Building and La Pirogue Hotel.

How to Reach?

By Air – Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (SSR Airport) is the nearest airport located 49 km away. It’s a 50-minute drive to the town.

By Road – Bus service from Port Louis to the town is available every 20 minutes. You can also rent a car and drive from Port Louis via A3 road that is connected with coastal road of Flic en Flac.

Best Time to Visit

October, November, and January are the best months to visit. On an average, Flic en Flac experiences 10 hours of sunshine every day. Even though the town has a dry season, it is not very discernible.
