Over the years the number of app-based taxi services has seen a significant increase. Some of these are limited to specific regions or countries, while others have gone on to establish their presence worldwide. Among these is Uber, which within a few years has become one of the most popular cab services in the world.
Uber is an app-based transportation company, which can also be booked through the website. Founded in March 2009 in the US state of California, the company has grown exponentially over the years and today has a presence in all the continents across the globe with around 100 million users. Currently, the company operates in 785 metropolitan areas in the world and has an employee strength of 16,000 people. More than half of these employees, 9,382 people, are based in the United States. Uber has a major presence in the United States with a market share of 69 percent. However, UberPop, which provides a compact or subcompact car, is banned in certain countries like Italy, France, Netherlands, etc.
Uber provides a number of services such as UberASSIST, which gives additional assistance to people with physical disabilities and senior citizens; UberAUTO, which is an auto rickshaw service and is available in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka; UberBIKE, a dockless bicycle sharing system, UberBLACK; and many others.
Though Uber is expanding its operations worldwide, but in Africa it has yet to establish a firm footing. In the continent, Uber has operations in 17 cities. Some of these are Cairo, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Casablanca, Durban, Cape Town etc, It has also not been able to wholly dominate the Middle Eastern market and has a presence in 11 cities. These include Tel Aviv, Riyadh, Jeddah, Dubai, Beirut, etc.
It has a strong presence in the US with operations in Chicago, Charlotte, Florida Keys, Iowa City, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Manhattan, Miami, and many others. Other cities of the world where the company has a presence are Leipzig, London, Lisbon, Paris, Prague, Dublin, Berlin, Delhi NCR, etc.
