How Many Time-Zones does Brazil have?

5/5 - (3 votes)

There are four time-zones in Brazil.

The four standard time zones in which Brazil is divided are; UTC−02:00, UTC−03:00, UTC−04:00, and UTC−05:00.

UTC−02:00 is observed in the offshore Atlantic islands of Fernando de Noronha, Rocas Atoll, Trindade, Martim Vaz, and Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago. Among these, Fernando de Noronha is the only island comprising a permanent population, while the rest are uninhabited.

UTC−03:00 covers approximately 60% of the land area of Brazil. It is observed in the Federal district, which includes the national capital city Brasilia. It is also used in the states located in the northeast, southeast, and the southern regions. Other states that use this time are Pará, Tocantins, and Amapá.

UTC−04:00 is used in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Roraima, Mato Grosso, and Rondônia. It is also observed in most of Amazonas, the largest state in Brazil by area. This time zone is observed in approximately 34% of the land area of the country.

UTC−05:00 was abolished in 2008, but reinstated in 2013. This time zone, which is observed in Brazil’s far-western tip, covers some 6% of the land area of the country. It is entirely observed in the state of Acre and in the southwestern part of Amazonas.

Daylight-saving time is observed in the central-western, southern and the southeast states of Brazil. Apart from the Federal District, daylight-saving time is used in the states of São Paulo, the Rio Grande do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso do Sul, Espírito Santo, Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso, Paraná, Minas Gerais, and Goiás. Daylight saving time in Brazil is observed between the third Sunday of October and the third Sunday of February. However, the end of the daylight-saving time may be pushed back to the next Sunday during the years when the Carnival celebrations are observed on the third Sunday.
