Namibia Attractions



Namibia attractions include Etosha National Park, Skeleton Coast, Fish River Canyon, the Brandberg Massif, etc. Etosha National Park is one of the popular attractions of Namibia. The best time of visiting this park is between the months of August and September. The biggest game reserve of Africa is Etosha National Park. This reserve has all the animal species of Africa. Etosha National Park has 300 lions, 2000 giraffes, 1500 elephants and 300 rhinos. Bird lovers would enjoy the place Etosha as it has more than thousand species of birds.

Windhoek Attractions

Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia, includes places of attractions like Alte Feste, The Old Brewery, State House, Old Location, College of Art, Zoo Park, Oude Voorpost, Tinten Palast, etc. The Zoo Park constitutes playground for children, an open-air theatre and a garden with a pond. Oude Voorpost was constructed by the German Government as an office of government survey but presently it houses the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.

The Skeleton Coast Park is another attraction in Namibia. The remnants of shipwrecks are spread out by the Skeleton Coast. Northern part and southern part are the two zones of this park. This park covers an area of 1.6 million hectare. The southern part of this park is open for public attraction and the northern part is inhabited by the Himba people.

Namibia Wildlife

Namibia Wildlife forms a significant part of the tourist attractions of the country. The wildlife parks and game reserves of Namibia are home to numerous species of animals and birds. The terrain, the climate and the vegetation of the country support the wildlife in Namibia.

Namibia wildlife is mostly concentrated around the 26 wildlife parks and game reserves. The most important of these parks is the Etosha National Park. The park serves as the habitat of 114 species of mammals of which 8 are found only in Namibia. The Black Faced Impala has a black stripe on its face that distinguishes it from the common Impala.

The Etosha National Park forms an important center of Namibia Wildlife. The abundance of herds of Gemsbok, Burchell’s Zebra, Blue Wildebeest and Springbok bring the members of the feline family in search of prey. The Lion, Cheetah and Leopard can be observed in the park as well. Other types of wildlife in Namibia witnessed in the park include elephants, rhinos, etc.

The Waterberg Plateau National Park serves as a shelter for endangered species of Namibia wildlife like the Roan and Sable Antelope, White Rhino and Tsessebe. Other animals belonging to the endangered list are Black Rhino, Puku, Wild Dog and Oribi. The Cape Cross Reserve is home to the seals found on the coasts of Namibia.

The desert regions of the country provide shelter to a different sort of Namibia Wildlife. The sand dunes are home to various kinds of lizards found only in Namibia. The country also boasts of a rich and varied bird life. The number of bird species found in Namibia are about 620, of which the African Fish Eagle is the most famous.

Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay beckons the tourist with its barren coastlines, an equally barren desert and the amazing sand dunes. It is well connected to other Namibian cities and tourist destinations like the Sossusvlei, Namib and Nauklatt.

Tourists can opt for a comfortable accommodation in various hotels of Walvis Bay depending upon their individual requirements. The Lagoon Lodge, Casa Mia Hotel, The Langholm Hotel and The Courtyard Hotel are some of the options amongst numerous others. Dining options in Walvis Bay are far too many. The restaurants and food joints specialize in various preparations of meat and seafood. The Bay area is specially known for the oysters that are locally cultivated and served at most of the restaurants.

Walvis Bay is a perfect getaway for adventure freaks. There is hardly any other place in Namibia which has so much to offer. Be it the seal and dolphin cruises in the Atlantic or Quad biking in the desert, dune para-gliding or Lagoon Kayaking, adventures in the Kuiseb Delta or Dune sand boarding, excursions to the Sandwich Harbor or Ski Boat Angling, Para sailing or simply a desert tour ,each one of these experiences can set the adrenaline moving.

The Walvis Bay Museum is also quite popular among the tourists, especially those who want to get an insight into the life and times of the place since its early days. The Birdlife Information Center is another place thronged by tourists .Its popularity greatly rests on the fact that Walvis Bay has a large bird population, both local and migratory, and is quite popular amongst bird watchers.

Namibia Desert

Namib Desert, the main Namibia Desert, covers an area of about 50,000 square km. Namibia Desert is one of the spectacular geographical features of Namibia.

For going to Namibia Desert one should avail aircraft from Windhoek, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. The road which leads towards Namibia Desert is in bad condition. So it is advised to avail airways.

Namib Desert is a part of Namib-Naukluft National Park. The desert of Namibia is the oldest desert of the world. This desert receives less then 10 mm rainfall.

Namib Desert of Namibia has a wide range of plant and animal species. One of the strangest species found in this desert is Welwitschia mirabilis. Welwitschia mirabilis is a type of shrub which has two long leaves. The leaves of Welwitschia endure throughout its whole life. The strap-shaped leaves of this plant sometimes get twisted by the onslaught of the desert winds. This plant persists in the highly arid circumstances in Namib Desert. Welwitschia mirabilis derives moisture from the fogs of coastal sea and this is how the plant survives the arid conditions. The desert also has several species of reptiles like Meroles cuneirostris, Ptenopus kochi, Rhoptropus bradfieldi, micropholidotus, etc. The Hartmann’s zebras can be seen in the eastern part of this desert.

The Namib Desert has the highest sand dunes of the world. The large part of this desert is uninhabited. Namib is a place of significance for the mining of tungsten, diamonds and salt.
