Sachsen

Sachsen, which is popularly known as the Free State of Saxony, is located in the eastern part of Germany. The capital of Sachsen is Dresden, while its largest city is Leipzig. The state, which is landlocked, covers an area of 7,109 square miles, which makes it the tenth largest in the country. The state currently has a population of 4 million and is the sixth most populated state of the country. The state shares its borders with other German states such as Brandenburg, Saxony Anhalt, Thuringia, and Bavaria. The two countries that border Sachsen are Poland and Czech Republic. The state is divided into ten districts.

Sachsen is a popular tourist destination and attracts travelers from around the world. The capital Dresden and the largest city Leipzig attract the largest number of tourists. Saxon Switzerland, Ore Mountains, Vogtland, and Lusatian mountains are marvelous sights to behold, while Meissen, Freiberg, Pirna, Bautzen, and Görlitz are historic towns of the state and must-see destinations. Some of the attractions that the state presents are Saxon Switzerland National Park, Leipzig Zoo, Semper Opera House in Dresden, St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Pillnitz Castle & Park in Dresden, Market Square in Leipzig, among others.

Sachsen is well-connected by air, rail and road. The airports of Dresden and Leipzig offer flights to other German as well as European cities. Traveling by train is easy as both Leipzig and Dresden are well-connected to the ICE rail network. Famous European cities such as Prague, Budapest, Berlin, and Vienna are connected to Dresden via the EC (Eurocity). CNL sleeper trains connect Dresden with the capital of Netherlands, Amsterdam, and the Swiss city of Zurich.
