There are about 18 islands that constitute the Faroe Islands, along the shorelines of Northern Europe. The sole uninhabited land within this island is the area of Lítla Dímun.
The regions are mainly jagged and rock strewn which boasts of having the highest cliff peaks nearly about 882 metres. This cliff is popularly known as Slættaratindur, lying just above the sea level. The coastline in this region stretches to about 1100 km and is just about 5 km away leaving behind the main ocean.

The Faroe Islands that derive from the Danish word Sheep Islands, is a collective group of islands placed within the region of Northern Europe. Summer usually witnesses huge congregation of different species of birds nestled within the northern and western coastal regions of the island. There are nearly 300 species of birds where about 40 falling within the category of breeding birds while the rest 40 being the rarest known species found here. Watch out gannet nesting along the Mykines and Mykinesholm area or view storm petrels flocking along the region of Nolsoy. It is during the end of May or till the July end, the guillemot is among the breeding species that settles down in the cliff regions of Faroe Islands. Kittiwake seeks its habitat along the craggy and rocky areas within these tall cliffs.

People Of Faroe Islands

Among the overall population, people descended from the Faroese, Norse and Celtic group. It was mainly the Viking settlers who inhabited this area during the 9 th century.

The national language in this region is Faroese which has its roots defined from the Old Norse. The English language is widely accepted and the Nordic language is even used frequently within the region. Majority of the population is influenced by the EvangelicalLutheran religion and about 10 percent are inclined to the religion of Christian Brethren (Plymouth Brethren).

Arts, Culture And Music Of Faroe Islands

Art: Painting came into existence during the 20th century with the emergence of several painters like Sámuel Joensen-Mikines, Ingálvur av Reyni, Ruth Smith, Tróndur Patursson, Steffan Danielsen and many others. It was during this time, landscape painting was primarily the core theme among most of the painters. Villages, forests, mountains, scenic country beauty, fjords all were well depicted in the paintings. One may even visit the national art museum Listaskálin while traveling to Faroe Island. Several exhibitions are even held here like the spring exhibition celebrated during the month of May and the Saint Olav’s Day exhibition presented during the July.

Culture: Faroe Island shares a common cultural tie-up with the region of Norway, Iceland, and Denmark. The Nordic House is acclaimed as a cultural hub that upholds the culture of Nordic and Faroese region.

Music: Faroese music is vocal in nature that goes along with the fiddle and other European dances, which includes the minuet and polka. Choirs came into existence where some of the best example being Tarira, Havnarkórið, Tórshavnar Manskór, Ljómur, Fuglafjarðar Gentukór, and many others.

The Faroese dance, even gained wide popularity, which came in the form of medieval ring dance that was initiated in France and widely extended throughout Europe. Faroese dance is accompanied with a song, which is accompanied with a storyline that is narrated through the dancing steps. The ancient ballads and heroic ballads comprises of 70,000 stanzas has there are three major types within the group. To name them are: kvæði, tættir and vísir.

The other popular music within the region is skjaldur. It is sung by adults especially for the children, while narrating the sequence of fairy tales with the help of individual song that is sung.

Economy Of Faroe Islands

The economic development of the Faroe Islands depends mainly on the fishing industry. Fish farming along with processing contributes its major share in the income growth of the country. Government is making enough efforts in constructing several fish processing plants, which would increase the efficiency level of the present industry. Petroleum even has its minor share in the economy’s revenue growth. Several business assignments have been put in place to bring along several investments within the country.
