March 20, 1854 – Republican Party was founded

The Republican Party was founded on March 20, 1854. The party was established with an aim to oppose the spread of slavery into the western territories of the USA. The Whig Party, which had been established in 1834 with an aim to oppose the tyranny of Andrew Jackson who was the president of the USA at the time, had proved ineffective in dealing with the slavery issue. So, in order to establish a new party that would prove effective in dealing with the crisis, four members of the Whig Party met in Ripon, Wisconsin on March 20, 1854, to form a new party. This is remembered as the founding meeting of the Republican Party.
