17 Feb 2016 : Three American citizens who were kidnapped in Iraq have been freed. Media reports quoted US and Iraqi officials as saying the three men who are in good health have been handed over to the US embassy. It is not yet known who was behind the kidnapping; however, officials believe that an Iranian-backed militia is responsible.

27 July 2014 : Violent confrontation unleashed between the IA backed by the IA Aviation and ISIS at Yusufiyah and Latifiyah in southern Baghdad. Causalities have not been reported as yet.

26 July 2014 : Hamrin Dam, reportedly, came under attack by ISIS, who also engaged in violent clashes with the tribal people and IA. In the confrontation, four members of the IA got wounded while 15 ISIS insurgents got killed.

25 July 2014 : ISIS armed men attacked a checkpoint of Iraqi Army (IA) situated in Ibrahim al-Ali of Garma. The confrontation resulted in the death of an IA official and eight ISIS elements. Also, three soldiers of the IA got injured in the clash. On the other hand, hospital in Garma revealed that the air assaults in the place caused the death of more than 10 people, including children and women.

24 July 2014 : ISIS deployed two Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs) in Karrada of central Baghdad. The explosion resulted in the death of over 13 people and wounded more than 29.

23 July 2014 : Air assaults launched in Sharqat of Salah ad-Din Province targeted several houses in the vicinity, municipal building, and a youth center establishment. Reportedly, 14 people lost their lives and 22 people received severe injuries.

22 July 2014 : In north of Muqdadiyah, heavy confrontation took place between ISIS and the ISF (Iraqi Security Forces), in which a member of IA was killed and two others were wounded while eight members of ISIS were also killed.

21 July 2014 : Reportedly, volunteer headquarters situated in Bank Street of central Samarra City were attacked with more than three rounds of mortar. As a result of which, about twenty volunteers received severe injuries.

20 July 2014 : Reportedly, four air attacks were launched in the neighborhood of Wihda, eastern Mosul, which tore down 12 homes and caused injury to nine people.

19 July 2014 : Six Vehicle-Born Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs) detonated in the five neighborhoods cities of Baghdad: Jihad and al-Bayaa in southwestern Baghdad, Kadhmiyah in northern Baghdad, the area of Abu Dashir in southern Baghdad, and the neighborhood of Saydiyah. The casualty figures range from 70 to somewhere around 90.

18 July 2014 : ISIS and Iraqi Security Forces and residents of Fariseya and Seidat, northern Babil involved in heavy confrontation that resulted in the injury of dozens of people, including the ISIS members. Also, five residents of the place, in addition to nearly 15 ISIS elements, have lost their lives in the clash.

16 July 2014 : Nearly 200 families withdrew form Tajnid, southern Julula, when ISIS armed men seized the vicinity. Also, in Tal al-Ward area, southwest of Kirkuk city, heavy clash ensued between the gunmen and Peshmerga that led to the injury of 21 members of Peshmerga. The confrontation is reportedly still ongoing.

15 July 2014 : Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) launched a counter-terrorism operation in Tikrit, involving Iraqi Army (IA) and Iraqi Police (IA). “Al-Saif al-Batar”, meaning “The Severing Sword,” was the name of the operation, which was launched in the northern and southern parts of the city. Some reports mention that ISF managed to secure some significant locations of the city, namely the police academy and the Tikrit hospital.

14 July 2014 : ISIS clashed with the tribal and local residents of Amerli sub-district of eastern Tikrit in an attempt to capture it. The armed clash resulted in the injury of 15 tribal members with the death of five members of ISIS.

13 July 2014 : Nearly 80 ISIS gunmen launched an assault on Dhuluiya, north of Baghdad, which resulted in the death of four Iraqi officials and three members of the ISIS. While seven others are reported to have been injured.

July 9 Update : Sudur mini-dam situated nearly three miles east of Khalis has been seized by ISIS after involving in violent confrontation with the Iraqi Security Forces.

July 8 Update : Zowiya village, northern Salah ad-Din is now under the sway of ISIS militants after facing violent resistance from the local tribes. ISIS killed 13 people in the village and blew up 10 homes by firing nearly 60 mortar rounds.

Indian nurses returned home safely after freed from Islamist-held Mosul :

July 07, 2014 – A group of 46 Indian nurses, held hostage by ISIS militants in the war ravaged Iraq, returned home safely in the southern city of Kochi on Saturday morning, July 5. Oomen Chandy, Kerala Chief Minister was seen at the airport receiving them and relatives and friends of the Indian nurses were extremely elated to see them after an ordeal of 23 days.

‘Send Coffins,’ said Indian Nurses in Iraq as ISIS militants forced them to move :

July 04, 2014 – All the 46 Indian nurses made captive in an Iraqi hospital by Sunni insurgents called ISIS were forcibly shifted to another place on Thursday, July 3. And they were being hurled in a truck. The abducted nurses are reportedly from Kerala, which again put India in another situation of facing hostage.

Sona Joseph sobbingly told the media person over the phone, “Our government wasted a lot of time. Now, they can send coffins to bring us back.”

Iraq Crisis Timeline :

June 24 – American troops start to arrive in Baghdad. Kerry insists deployment of US forces is “not intervention” in Iraqi affairs.

June 23 – John Kerry, the US secretary of state, promises intense support for Iraq to tackle the ISIS’s “existential threat”.

June 22 – ISIS-led Sunni fighters seize Al-Qaim, along Syria, as well as Ana and Rawa towns. Iran’s top religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei says he’s against American intervention in Iraq.

June 20 – In an oblique reference to Iraq’s prime minister Nouri al-Maliki, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani says future Iraqi government must avoid “past mistakes”, and calls for expelling Jihadi fighters from the country.

June 19 – American President Barack Obama announces sending 300 military advisers to help the beleaguered Iraqi troops. There’s heavy fighting between militants and Iraqi soldiers around Baiji, Iraq’s biggest oil refinery site.

June 17 – Militants capture parts of Baquba, just 60 km from Baghdad, but security forces push them back.

June 15 – Sunni militants seize the area of Al-Adhim, located in Diyala province.

June 13 – Iraqi forces withdraw from Saadiyah, a town just 120 km northeast of Baghdad. Kurdish fighters take over the town. Iraq’s supreme Shiite religious figure, the Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, urges the county’s citizens to take part in the war against militants.

June 12 – Taking advantage of the power vacuum after withdrawal of Iraqi troops, the Kurdish Peshmerga seizes control of Kirkuk. Effectively, the three major ethnic groups in Iraq – the Shias, Sunnis and Kurds – now have their own enclaves.

June 11 – Tikrit, the capital of Salahudin province and hometown of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, also falls into the hands of ISIS fighters and other militant groups.

June 10 – In a stunning setback for Iraqi security forces, the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a jihadist group, and other Sunni fighters occupy Iraq’s second-largest city of Mossul, sending shockwaves in Baghdad and beyond. Thousands of Iraqi troops posted at Mossul flee from the battle scene, though they vastly outnumber ISIS fighters.
