Education in Bahrain

The Bahrain University began to operate in this Middle Eastern country in 1986. The University of Bahrain was in operation in various forms like institutes for higher education and polytechnic colleges from the 1960s.

It was awaiting a formal recognition as a university. Bahrain University is the biggest in Bahrain and pledges to build up bright careers of students. Apart from technological education and researches the Arabic culture and Islamic traditions are also carried forward by the university. The University of Bahrain has further improved itself by working in close association with the other foreign universities.




The Bahrain University is divided into eight colleges or departments which are:


  • Department of Arts
  • Department of Business
  • Department of Education
  • Department of Science
  • Department of IT
  • Department of Law
  • Scientific research department
  • Department of Engineering

There are a number of specialized centers in the University of Bahrain which helps the students in many ways. Some of those specialized centers are, Information Technology Center, E-Learning Center, Center of German Studies, Center of Japanese Studies, French Studies Center and Center of American Studies. One of the unique departments of the University of Bahrain is the Center of Transport and Road Studies. The center for international studies carries out some important researches necessary in the current political scenario of the world. The University of Bahrain not only imparts education and gives proper training but it also makes sure that their students have bright career. The Career Counseling Office is dedicated to this cause all through the year.

Bahrain has a total population of 1,325,000 of which 94.6% are literate. It is estimated that 96.1% of the men and 91.6% of the women in the country can read and write. Schooling is free and compulsory in Bahrain with the government spending 11% of its annual revenues on education. There are 259 schools in Bahrain out of which 203 are public schools and 56 are private. The total number of students attending these schools is 163,488, out of which 83,078 are male and the rest are female. According to UNICEF, the gross enrolment at pre- primary level is 59% both of male and female children. This is followed by primary school, the enrolment rate of which is 99% males and 98% females. The dropout rate at pre-primary and primary levels is considerably high. The table below enumerates the major schools with the contact details.

The number of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) services is limited in the public sector. These institutes are managed by specific TVET councils. The prime TVET institutes in Bahrain are Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance, The Bahrain Training Institute, Bahrain Institute of Hospitality and Retail, NIIT Middle East WLL, and Baisan Institute of Hospitality Management. About 58,560 people attend such centers. Bahrain has about 20 universities educating the residents in a variety of disciplines. Bahrain usually does not have extensive scholarship schemes for students wishing to study abroad. The facilities in the country are, however, very advanced and equal opportunities of higher studies are provided to both sexes. Bahrain has a labor force of 660,000 out of which 44% are non-nationals. Men comprise 65.5% of the labor force and the rest are women. Out of the employed labor force industrial sector claims the largest chunk at about 79%. The services sector employs 20% and the rest is engaged in agriculture. Only 10.8% of the whole labor force of Bahrain is unemployed.

Jobs in Bahrain

The numbers of jobs in Bahrain are increasing day by day with the growth of its economy. It is not only that there is ample magnitude of jobs in Bahrain but it has to be taken into consideration that these jobs have a very heavy pay package attached to it. The recent tag of the fastest growing economy depicted on Bahrain by the UNESCO is one of the main reasons why business houses from all over the world are flocking to this island country of the Middle East. Unlike other Arab nations the economy of Bahrain is most free. Last but not the least Bahrain like other Middle Eastern nations is also bestowed with the blessing of oil. This discovery in the 20 th century is main reason behind economic boom and the huge quantity of jobs generated in Bahrain . There is a high infiltration of foreigners especially from India and Pakistan to Bahrain due to the high paying jobs in the oil sector. The comparatively easy living condition, liberal attitude and western lifestyle might also be the reason why Bahrain jobs attract so many foreigners. There are number of international employment agencies which will help in securing jobs in Bahrain . The sectors in which most of the jobs in Bahrain are concentrated are petroleum companies, banking sector, power plants and also education sectors. In the recent years jobs in telecommunication sector have become very popular in Bahrain
