Located in the north-east of Australia, Queensland is the second-largest and the third-most-populous state in the country. The state is bordered by the Northern Territory, South Australia and New South Wales to the west, south-west and south. The Coral Sea and Pacific Ocean are in its east. The population of Queensland is 4,827,000 which is concentrated along the coast and mostly in the South East of the state.

The area of the state is 1,852,642 sq km, out of which 1,730,620 sq km is covered by land and 121,991 sq km by water. The state's area makes it the world's sixth largest sub-national entity. The capital of Queensland is Brisbane which is the largest city in the state and the third largest city of Australia.

Queensland is often referred as the "Sunshine State" because it has around 300 days of sunshine in a year. Out of 30 largest cities in Australia, 10 are in Queensland.
