About University of Washington, Seattle

In a nutshell
The University of Washington is a public research university, known for its reputed programs in nursing, public health, library science, architecture, medicines, and others. The institution is located in Seattle, Washington. It is the oldest state-supported university on the West Coast of the United States. The widely acclaimed university, founded in 1861, was relocated to its new campus in 1895. The three campuses of the university are located in the University District of Seattle (the primary and the largest campus), Tacoma, and Bothell. The campuses in Tacoma and Bothell are fairly new and were opened in 1990. Now, both run four-year honors courses and also offer master's degree programs.

The institution's student newspaper called The Daily of the University of Washington is the second largest one in the Seattle region. Moreover, it has launched The Daily's Double Shot, a weekly television magazine show that is broadcast on UWTW, Channel 27.

In the year 2014, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), placed the University of Washington 15th among the 500 top universities all over the world. Moreover, it has been ranked 26th in Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It is also ranked among the top five universities in the nation.

Academic Achievements

The university has the largest student population among the rest on the west coast with more than 42,000 students. Its staff and faculty come from all around the globe. The U.S. News & World Report mentions that the school's admission process is quite selective, with a 55.2 percent of acceptance rate for freshman students. Its research budget of $1.2 billion was passed in the year 2013.

Annual Tuition Fee - An Overview
Tuition and fees for undergraduate students varies based on residency. Those who do not reside in Washington during the 2013-14 year paid $31,971 at the Seattle campus as opposed to $11,305 for those who did. Over the past five years, it is seen that the fee has been consistently increasing for out-state-students every year.

Qualifying students can receive financial aid in all three campuses of the institution and are encouraged to explore several options, including work-study so that their education becomes as affordable as possible.

Student Housing Facilities
The University of Washington gives its students freedom to pick their own housing. Nearly 60 percent of freshman students decide to live in residence halls, which are seven in number and vary in location and size. The halls include all basic amenities such as WiFi and a clean, smoke-free environment. The off-campus housing is great as well and several other options are available to students.

Even though the majority of the student population comprises whites; the student body at UW is fairly diverse. One would see a variety of races while walking through campus and students are able to find like-minded people to hang out with.

The school has 32 residential fraternities, 17 sororities, and about 1,200 freshman students residing there every year. The school discourages freshmen to bring their cars on campus considering that parking is expensive and not readily available at all times. The campus is extremely safe for both students and faculty and its police department has 53 officers whose authority is the same as that of the other law enforcement officers.

Information regarding programs and departments can also be found on the UW Facebook pages. The university's mascot and Dubs has a page as well.
