Alabama is the twenty-second state of the United States; it was admitted to the Union on December 14, 1819. The early nineteenth century saw a number of battles being fought in the territory of Alabama. Initially, the Indians held most of the present-day Alabama. In 1813, war broke out in between American settlers and Red Sticks (a Creek faction), who resisted white encroachment. Eventually, the Red Sticks were crushed in 1814 at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in central Alabama, and were forced to sign a treaty ceding the land to the United States. Thereafter people flowed into the land and the population grew. Finally in 1817, Alabama became a territory and on August 2, 1819, a state constitution was adopted.<\/p>\n
