Cable car tracks down a steep SF street
Cable car tracks- Andrew Smith Hallidie patented a system whereby wire cables were installed in the ground, and moved in a closed loop around a system of pulleys. The cars are controlled by grips that slide between the streets and clamp on to the cables. A fire destroyed much of the city in 1906. Only three cable car lines remain today.
