Review of Lago di como restaurant in Santa Cruz, California<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

Lago di Como is an odd place. The food isn\u2019t bad, and everyone\u2019s friendly and everything, but you get the impression when you go there that they\u2019re just kind of making it up as they go along, and they\u2019re not really serious about it. Don\u2019t get me wrong \u2013 I liked the place, and I enjoyed my meal \u2013 but there is something really amateurish about this restaurant.<\/p>\n

So, if you\u2019re in Santa Cruz to go to the beach, or with a big group, and you just want to get an adequate Italian meal, then this place is just fine. However, if you\u2019re looking for really good Italian food, and you\u2019re willing to work for it a little (small places, waits, higher noise level) then I\u2019d recommend somewhere else \u2013 Caruso\u2019s<\/a>, or Lillian\u2019s<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The funny thing about this place is that they not only are sort of slapdash about things, but they also seem sort of self-conscious about it. At the end of our meal, the waiter comped us our dessert, which was a nice thing to do, and appreciated, but sort of demonstrated that they knew what was going on the whole time. Interesting.<\/p>\n

Food at\u00a0Lago di Como<\/span><\/h2>\n

Decent, but nothing to write home about.<\/p>\n

One appetizer was Polpo alla sarda — <\/i>octopus tossed with onion, potatoes, and celery in a lemon olive oil citronette. This is a fresh, warm salad, which I think would be fantastic if everything in it was absolutely fresh, and it was made to order. What arrived at our table was a small orange bowl with what I suspect was frozen octopus that had been thawed, along with onion, potato and celery chunks. The whole thing was relatively tasteless, and when I was finished, the bottom of the bowl had a layer of oily water in it. I really think the whole thing had been composed of frozen, thawed-out stuff.<\/p>\n

The second appetizer was a Caesar salad, which is something any Italian chef should be able to execute in his sleep, drunk, while chained up inside an abandoned warehouse. Lago di Como produced one that was decent, but also slightly dry, and a little dense and challenging.<\/p>\n

The entrees were better. The first was chicken scaloppine — Scaloppine di Pollo alla Modo Mio, <\/i>which is pounded chicken breast topped with baby spinach and mozzarella cheese in a white wine lemon sauce. <\/i>This dish was terrific \u2013 <\/i>flawlessly executed, chicken done perfectly, and the sometimes-tricky combination of spinach and cheese also beautifully done. This comes with side dishes of couscous and roasted potatoes, which were also perfect.<\/p>\n

The other entr\u00e9e, squid ink linguine with mussels, clams and fish, was also pretty good. The chef was a little too liberal with the oil \u2013 the whole thing had a slightly overpowering, slippery feeling. Also, I get tired sometimes of kitchens using this dish as a way to cut down on their food costs \u2013 the seafood consisted of three or so clams, a handful of mussels and a couple of random pieces of fish \u2013 but all in all, a nice effort and a good entr\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

Finally, after having our giggling waiter return to tell us that the dessert we had ordered was actually unavailable, we settled on a chocolate souffl\u00e9. It was fine \u2013 correctly done \u2013 but dolled up with the usual cheap-trick restaurant business of first, dropping three strawberry halves onto the plate, then hitting the whole thing with a couple squirts from a squeeze bottle of Hershey\u2019s chocolate syrup, sprinkling about a teaspoon of powdered sugar over the whole thing and suddenly \u2013 shazam!<\/i> \u2013 dessert creativity. The souffl\u00e9 itself was, as I\u2019ve said, fine, but the decorations were kind of annoying.<\/p>\n

The Ambiance of\u00a0Lago di Como<\/span><\/h2>\n

A little strange. The building is basically a square modern box that looks like it used to be something else. It\u2019s in the middle of a big, empty parking lot, and the entrance is an elaborate Italianate portico with the rain shield that looks like it was just sort of stuck onto the building. Although there are some decorative touches inside, like immense curtains that look like what I\u2019d imagine George Clooney\u2019s living room on Lake Como in Italy resembles (the name of this place translates for some random reason at \u201cLake Como\u201d) the building and its interior look like just enough was done to it to signal \u201cItalian\u201d and not much more.<\/p>\n

Service at Lago di Como<\/span><\/h3>\n

Really amateurish. Endearing, in the way that a large, stupid dog that makes a mess in the kitchen is, but it was fascinating to watch the serving team get every single thing wrong, item after item after item, and sort of not care. A few examples:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • We are seated, our drink orders are taken, Beth\u2019s drink is delivered, and then \u2026. nothing. My drink never arrives, waiters sort of go by, and neither my drink nor a waiter nor any interest in having us order is evident for at least ten minutes. We just sit there.<\/li>\n
  • Our waiter seems to think everything we say is hilarious. He can\u2019t do his job because of the giggling. This is amusing at first, but it get annoying.<\/li>\n
  • After we finish our appetizers (more on these later) another waiter, who we haven\u2019t seen before, comes by and out of the blue asks us if we want our check. Uh, no thanks, given that we haven\u2019t eaten yet.<\/li>\n
  • There is also a guitar player, performing songs by Neil Young and \u2026 get this \u2026 Pink Floyd. The room had a lot of hard surfaces, which makes the music very loud and echoey, and really annoying. As subtle background music, that kind of thing is fine, sort of. As something that competes with the conversation you\u2019re trying to have, it\u2019s not pleasant.<\/li>\n
  • Our entr\u00e9e is delivered by another server we\u2019ve never seen before, who has an incredibly heavy Italian accent, who goes way overboard on the Italian terminology (\u201cMay I take your water, Signora<\/i>?\u201d) and seems like something out of a cartoon. I have eaten actual dinners at actual restaurants in actual Italy, and I don\u2019t recall ever hearing anyone there speak English like this. I suspect he was making it up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
