Rhythmic Gymnastics Schedule and Venue for Rio 2016 Olympic Games

Rhythmic Gymnastics at Olympics: Rhythmic gymnastics is a discipline included in the gymnastics program at the international competitions. Rhythmic gymnastics is a combination of athletics and ballet. The discipline was developed in the middle of the twentieth century. Then the event was called "modern gymnastics". However, rhythmic gymnastics started to evolve in the nineteenth century. The event is generally contested by only women. Men's rhythmic gymnastics was originated in Japan. Men's program combines men's artistic gymnastics, women's rhythmic gymnastics and Wushu martial art form.

  • Rhythmic gymnastics is contested with apparatus. The programs are performed accompanied by music. The exercises are performed on a floor. The rhythmic gymnastics teams consist of five gymnasts. During the gymnastic exercises, the gymnasts perform with apparatus like hoop, ball, clubs, rope and ribbon. The Federation Internationale de Gymnastique or the FIG is authorized to govern the sport discipline at the international level.

    Rhythmic Gymnastics in the Summer Games: Rhythmic gymnastics was included in the women's gymnastics program at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games. The only event contested at the 1984 Games was individual all-round. Another event, the group all-round was introduced to the gymnastics schedule at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games. Currently the events in the Olympic rhythmic gymnastics program are-

    • Individual all-round for women
    • Group competition for women

    Rules of Rhythmic Gymnastics: The Federation Internationale de Gymnastique or the FIG is the organization, which sets rules for the rhythmic gymnastics at the international level. Some of the rules followed during the international competition, are-

    • The size, weight, material and color of the apparatus used during the gymnastics competitions are specified by the FIG.
    • The duration of the individual programs is generally between 60 and 90 seconds. The programs are usually accompanied by piano music.
    • Two panels of judges are appointed during the competition to monitor the gymnasts' performance.
    • In the group competitions, two routines are performed by the gymnasts. In the first routine, a single type pf apparatus is used. In the second routine, all the five types of apparatus should be used by them.
    • The measurement of the floor, on which the competition is held, is predetermined by the FIG. The gymnasts have to use the entire floor during their program.
    • The sequence, in which the apparatus have to be used during the competition, is specified by the FIG.
    • In the competitions, two rounds are held-one qualification round and final round.
    • In the individual all-round competition, ten best gymnasts in the qualifying round are selected for the final round.
    • In the group competition, the top eight teams move forward in the final round.
    • The numbers of participants in the individual and group competitions are fixed by the FIG.
    • The FIG has specified the minimum age of the participants in the gymnastics competitions.
    • The "code of points" is used to give points to the participants for their performances. The participant with the maximum points is the winner of the competition.
    • The official competition attire is only permitted during the competition. any other dress is prohibited.

Y ulia Barsukova, Yulia Raskina, Ekaterina Serebrianskaya, Alexandra Timoshenko, Vera Sessina, Natalia Godunko, Marina Lobatch, Alina Kabaeva, Inna Zhukova, Irina Tchachina, Anna Bessonova, Natalia Lavrova, Olga Kapranova, Karen Cockburn and Huang Shanshan are some of the leading gymnasts at the field of the rhythmic gymnastics at the international level.

    Team USA defeated team Serbia to win its third straight basketball gold medal in Men’s Basketball tournament. The winning team’s coach Mike Krzyzewski was utmost delighted with his team’s victory on the final day of Rio 2016 Olympic Games. USA won by a 19-15 lead and this is their 25th straight victory at the Olympic Games in addition to the 15th straight victory in the basketball tournament. 

    Mo Farah of Great Britain has bagged the gold by winning the 5000 meters final and completed the double double. According to media reports, with this victory Farah has become the second man in the history of Olympics to be able to successfully defend his 5000 and 10000 Olympic championships. His victory is being hailed on Twitter with some calling him the greatest long distance runner of all time. Meanwhile, the silver medal has gone to Paul Kipkemoi Chelimo and Dejen Gebremeskel of Ethiopia has bagged the bronze.

    In the women's event, Caster Semenya of South Africa won the Olympic gold in the 800m. She won in one minute 55.28 seconds.  Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi won the silver medal and Kenya's Margaret Nyairera Wambui bagged the bronze.

    Chen Long of China has taken gold medal in the Rio Olympics 2016 after defeating Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, who has won a silver in men’s badminton today. Lee was facing pressure not to lose the match. He beat Lin Dan of China in the semi-final. Lee and Lin, both are considered to be the best players of their time. With Lee’s defeat, Malaysia has missed out the chance of getting an Olympic gold medal.


    Italy came up with a win and is heading to men's volleyball final against Brazil, after defeating USA. The US men's volleyball team tried all their survival skills, but could not stand in front of Italy. The winning team's thriller was 30-28, 26-28, 9-25, 25-22, 15-9. After it was over, US coach John Speraw said that the team was not skilled enough and they did not execute on some of the opportunities, which Italy flawlessly did

    French boxer Estelle Mossely celebrated her 24th birthday by winning a gold medal in Women’s lightweight boxing championship. She defeated China’s Yin Junhua after the end of four rounds that had the two defending champions leveled on the scorecards of three judges. The bronze medals were earned by Mira Potkonen of Finland and Anastasia Beliakova of Russia.
