  • Career: Vitaly Scherbo started practicing gymnastics when he was only seven years old. Scherbo represented the former USSR in the World Championships and the World Cup in the 1990-'91 season. During the European Championships, he scored a perfect 10.0 in the vault event. Scherbo was the all-round silver medalist in the 1991 World championships. Scherbo was selected in the Unified Team for the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games . In the Games, he won six gold medals in the gymnastics competition. Following the 1992 Olympics, Scherbo won the all-round title in the 1993 world championships. He also won the 1993 and 1994 American Cup titles. In 1996, Scherbo's wife had a serious accident while driving a car. This accident hampered Scherbo's career to a great extent. He stopped his preparation for the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games. However, after his wife's recovery, Scherbo started his training program for the 1996 Games. He won the 1996 World Championships title. In the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games, Scherbo won bronze medals in four gymnastic events. Scherbo could not participate in the 1997 World Championships because of a motorcycle accident. Following the accident in 1997, he retired from the sport.

    Performance at the Olympics: Vitaly Scherbo participated in the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games at the age of 20. In the Games, he made history by winning six gold medals in the gymnastics competition. Scherbo won the first Olympic title of his career in the team event. His second Olympic gold medal was won in the all-round gymnastic competition. In the individual apparatus finals, Scherbo won gold medals in the parallel bars, the vault and the rings events. In the pommel horse event, he tied for the gold medal. With these four gold medals, Scherbo became the first person to win four gold medals in one day in the history of Summer Games. He was also the first gymnast to win six gold medals in one Olympics. Scherbo participated at the Olympics for the second time in the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games . This time, he won four bronze medals in the horizontal bars, the parallel bars, vault events and the all-around gymnastics competition.
