Career: Marie-Jose Perec represented France in the 200 meter sprint event at the 1988 Seoul Summer Games. Perec won bronze medal in the 400 meter event at the 1990 EAA European Championships. She won her first international title in the 400 meter event at the 1991 Tokyo World Championships. In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics , Perec won the first Olympic Gold medal of her career in the 400 meter event. In the 1994 EAA European Championships, she won Gold medals in both the 400 meter sprint and 4x400 meter relay events. Perec won her second World Championships title in the event in 1995. In the 1996 Barcelona Summer Summer Games , she won double Gold medal in the 200 meter and 400 meter events. In the 400 meter event, she set a new Olympic record of 48.25 seconds. Perec was the first athlete to win the 400 meter title twice and to achieve the double Gold medal in the 200 meter and 400 meter events. Perec was a member in the U.S. team for the 2000 Sydney Summer Games. However, she left the Olympic village just before the competition and did not compete in the Games.


Performance at the Olympics: Marie-Jose Perec participated in the Summer Games for the first time at the 1988 Seoul Summer Games. In the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games , Perec won her first Olympic title in the 400 meter event defeating Olha Bryzhina, the defending champion. Perec successfully defended her 400 meter Olympic title in the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games . In the Games, she also won the 200 meter sprint event beating Merlene Ottey of Jamaica. With her achievements in the 1996 Games, Perec became the second athlete in the history of Olympics to win the double Gold medal in the 200 meter and 400 meter events.
