Artistic Gymnastics at Olympics: Gymnastics is a sport, which evolved from fitness and beauty practices used by ancient Greeks. Gymnastics includes various movements like handstands, handsprings, arials and forward rolls. The acrobatic movements performed during the gymnastic event are often practiced high above the ground.Artistic gymnastics is a discipline included in the gymnastic program. In the event, competitors exercise short routines with various apparatus. The discipline was developed in the ancient days in Greece. The modern sport event made its appearance in the nineteenth century. The artistic gymnastic events require strength, balance, flexibility and energy on the part of the participants. The Federation Internationale de Gymnastique or the FIG is the governing body if the sport discipline at the international level.

Artistic Gymnastics at the Summer Games: Artistic gymnastics was included in the men's gymnastics program at the 1896 Athens Summer Summer Games. Women started participating in the event thirty years later during the 1928 Amsterdam Summer Games. The events, in which men and women contest at the Olympics are-

  • Categories of Artistic Gymnastics: Artistic gymnastics has been divided into various categories on the basis of the apparatus used during the competition. The most common categories of the artistic gymnastics are-

  • Still rings
  • Parallel bars
  • Horizontal bars
  • Rules of Artistic Gymnastics: The Federation Internationale de Gymnastique or the FIG sets the rules for the artistic gymnastics at the international level. Some of the rules are-

  • Exercises performed by the participants in each event are predetermined by the FIG.
  • The number of participants in the men's and women's artistic gymnastics competitions is fixed by the FIG.
  • The apparatus used during the competition have to be per the regulations set by the FIG.
  • All the equipments should be checked thoroughly before the commencement of the competition.
  • The age of the participants in the gymnastics competitions are specified by the FIG. In the case of artistic gymnastics, the minimum age is fixed at 16 years.
  • Judges are appointed during the gymnastics competitions to monitor the performances.
  • The participants are given points for their performances. The system used for giving points is known as the "code of points". The participant with the maximum points is declared the winner of the competition.
  • During the competition, the competitors have to wear the competition attire. Any other dress is not permitted.
