Kosice City Map

The second largest city after the capital, Bratislava, Kosice Slovakia is situated in the valley of River Hornad. The city forms the administrative center of the eastern region and also the heart of industry, commerce, science and culture of eastern Slovakia. It has a colorful history which dates back to 1230 when it was named "Villa Cassa".

Historic relics of different eras in its long existence make up the historic center of the city of Kosice. The main street, bordered by burgher houses and palaces, provides the tourists with a pleasant walk. It also forms the hub of major events of the city. The long history and culture of Kosice is showcased in the various architectural productions that are located in Kosice.

Kosice in Slovakia has a number of interesting and charming tourist attractions. The most significant of these is St. Elizabeth's Cathedral which is supposed to be one of the most attractive Gothic structures of the world. Constructed between 1378 and 1508 this cathedral is the oldest architectural piece of Kosice. The main altar made up of 3 large statues and 48 panel paintings is an imposing part of the structure. Lateral altars and Gothic wall paintings add a sense of sublime.

Another Gothic structure built during the 14th C is the St. Michael's Chapel which lies to the south of the cathedral. It is the second oldest edifice in Kosice and originally it was a cemetery. The Forgach Palace which was built in the 19th C for the aristocrats is of 2 storeys. Today it contains the State Science library. A popular tourist attraction is the Eastern Slovakia Museum, a neo-renaissance construct of 1899. The museum consists of exhibitions on the development of eastern Slovakia, numismatic collections, and the Gold treasure of Kosice.
