Rio Maior is a very old and small town in Portugal located among the beautiful forest of eucalyptus and pine trees. Several major destinations of the region is easily accessible from the town, which makes it a very convenient base for visiting places like Obidos, Batlaha, several beaches and all.
The land of Rio Maior is very fertile and it is considered to be one of the agricultural centres of the region.

Location of Rio Maior
The town of Rio Maior is situated in the Valley of Tagus River between Santarem and Obidos within the Santarem district. The district of Santarem is located on the west central part of Portugal.

History of Rio Maior
According to several prehistoric archeological evidences, Rio Maior had been established even before the 16th century. The region was inhabited by the Romans and the Moors successively. Rio Maior received its status as a town in 1836.

Tourist Attractions around Rio Maior
  • One of the major tourist attractions in Rio Maior is the parish church from the 16th century. The church is located at the heart of the town.
  • There are several historical mansions from the 17th and 18th century located all over the town.
  • The village of Obidos is situated within a short distance from Rio Maior. The walled village is a very popular tourist destination.
  • Batlaha and Alcobaca are the two towns where fascinating historical churches are located. The distance between these two towns and Rio Maior is very short.
Within an easy reach lay the beautiful beaches of Sao Martinho do Porto and Nazare.
