The Glitz of Kuala Lumpur
Celebrating Thaipusam
Kuala Lumpur, or KL as it is affectionately called is a unique medley of cultures - often contradictorily bewildering. Malay, Chinese, and Indian colors stand out in the masterpiece that is KL but this by no means diminishes the international flavors of the city. The city can be rustic and quaint, chic and swanky, cold and crisp, and hearteningly friendly - all at once. The only way to understand Kuala Lumpur is to dive right in and live every moment eclectically picking what the city has to offer.
About The Festival
To see Kuala Lumpur come alive, the best time to visit the city is during the Tamil Hindu festival of Thaipusam in late January. The colorful procession of thousands of devotees throngs the city streets as the idol of Lord Murugan is taken in a chariot from Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in KL to the Batu Caves Temple in Selangor. The kavadi or ritual altar and many painful burdens are borne by fervent Hindus as they proceed. The grand ceremony at the Batu Caves temple is a whole new story. The Thaipusam is both an exhilarating and exhausting experience you are certain to cherish.
