Considered the northern subcontinent of the Americas, North America is situated in the Northern and Western Hemispheres. North America is surrounded by Arctic Ocean to its north, Atlantic Ocean to the east, Pacific Ocean to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the southeast. The other subcontinent, South America, also lies to its southeast. Covering an area of 24,709,000 sq. km., North America is the third largest continent by area after Asia and Africa.

On August 13, 1961, Berliners woke to a divided city. The Berlin Wall was constructed by the German Democratic Republic to separate West Berlin from East Berlin so as to prevent the massive emigration and defection, as thousands of East Germans were fleeing to the democratic West during the early period of the Cold War. It was opened in November 1989 and its demolition officially began on June 13, 1990.
