The town of Mahebourg has a glorious history. It was the first place in Mauritius visited by the colonizers several centuries back. Mahebourg was once an important harbor buzzing with activity. The town was named after the eminent French Governor Mahe La Bourdonnais but was pronounced as 'May Burg'.

The bay in Mahebourg is a charming milieu for the town. The ecology of Mahebourg is well preserved at the I'le aux Aigrettes bird sanctuary. I'le aux Aigrettes is managed by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation and a perfect destination for eco-tourism trip. Local shops and street peddlers in the town sell a wide variety of spices and delicacies. A diverse range of locally made local crafts and textiles are sold in the Mahebourg markets. The Blue Bay Marine Park is close to the town. The Naval Museum is another attraction of the town that also houses a handicraft village.
