Savannakhet is the capital city of the Savannakhet Province in Laos and it has a population around 120,000 and literally it means 'city of paradise'.
The major attraction of the Savannakhet is the 'Ho Chi Minh Trail' and it's a significant spot of Laos. It's history dates back to the days of Vietnam war. During the war the North Vietnamese used network of trails, caves and gravel to move the ordnance , tanks and trucks to South Vietnam and from that time the trail came to be known as Ho Chi Minh Trail. On the other hand the USA denied saturation bombing to the trail within the Laos. It is heard that about 900 sorties per day of explosives were used. The Jungle area has recovered a lot from the past and defoliants and herbicides has grown back again. The visitors can explore some safe areas but a guidance of local tourists is essential.
That Ing Hang is the holiest spot to worship in the whole of Laos and it's situated in Savannakhet. The small museums along with the market place are the added attractions of the Savannakhet and they together will make your trip to Savannakhet a memorable one.
