Nyeri, with around a population of 98,908, is situated 180km north of Nairobi. Nyeri used to be a garrison in the colonial period but soon it turned into a trading center for the white farmers who produced cattle, wheat and coffee.Nyeri is the administrative headquarter of the central province.

The White Rhino Hotel and Aberdaire Country Club at Mweiga are living reminders of the history of this place. Now it is a well-developed place with banks, vehicle repair shops, bookstores, hardware stores and a vibrant market. Nyeri's main industry is farming. Cash crops like coffee, tea are grown. Maize is also grown as staple food.

Nyeri is the gateway to the Aberdares from where you can get the view of the majestic Mt Kenya on a clear day. At the beginning of 20th century the Italian missionaries constructed Mathari Mission, which is a home to many dwellings, stalls. The Consolatta hospital and School of Nursing provides free care to people of the surrounding area free of charge.

Nyeri is proud to be the homeland of many well known figures like Didan Kimathi (great mau-mau leader), Wangari Maathai (Noble Peace prize winner), and Mwai Kibaki (third president of Kenya).
