Yamagata city is the capital of Yamagata prefecture in Japan. Yamagata is situated in the region of Tohoku. With a rich cultural background , excellent educational opportunities, good transportation systems and many other infrastructural facilities, Yamagata city has claimed distinction among many other capital cities of different prefectures in Japan.
Yamagata city was established on 1 st April in the year 1889. It has an area of 381.34 square kilometers. With this area it is home to almost 2, 60,000 people. People of Yamagata have a choice of a wide range of cultural festivals for their entertainment and pleasure. In summer there is the Hanagasa festival which is a very big festival in the whole Tohoku region. Then in autumn there is the traditional Imoni-kai food festival.
In addition, Yamagata is the host city of the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival as well.
Transportation system in this city is very developed and is served by the Shinkasen or the bullet train service. There is direct rail link from Tokyo the bullet train comes to Yamagata city . On the bus route it is served by several highways and express ways. Yamagata has several campuses that belong to the main Yamagata University. In Kojirakawa campus there are literature, education, social science and other science departments. Another campus, Lida campus has the medicine department. Yamagata is also famous for its mountain temple known as the Yama-dera temple.
