Iga City was built out of the merging of Ueno City with the surrounding areas. Named after the former province of Iga, now known as the Mie prefecture, the Iga Ueno City is famously known as the birthplace of the Ninjutsu or Ninja Martial Art.
Local Tourist Attractions in Iga City :-
- The House and Hermitage of Basho Matshuo , the great Haiku poet has been carefully preserved as a museum. There are interesting displays of Basho's works and articles of use.
- The Ueno Castle is a relic from the 16 th century. Once the seat of governance of the local lords, the palace was built with rich woods in a traditional style. The castle was later enlarged during the Edo Period.
- The Iga Ninja Museum has very informative displays about the Ninjutsu or Ninja Martial Art Form and the Ninja Warriors themselves. The Ninjas were known as stealthy movers and spies, involved in espionage activities for the emperor. The Ninja Museum at Iga has is uniquely constructed like a Ninja house with trick walls and trap doors with hiding places and secret compartments. Ninja weapons are also prominently displayed. There is a demonstration zone where Ninja skills and weapons are displayed during a live show.
