India Population



India the largest democratic nation and is also the second most populous nation of the world. The current Indian population is estimated to be around 1.2 billion approximately.
A large section of the Indian population resides in the rural areas. But in the last few decades as more and more people are migrating to the urban regions there has been considerable rise in the urban population. According to the census of the year 1999 the urban population has risen by 32%.

Amongst the 28 states of India, Uttar Pradesh has been marked as the most densely populated state of the county. Mumbai is estimated to be the most densely populated city of India. The population of some of the major cities of India, as estimated is:
  • Mumbai- 15 million
  • Kolkata- 12 million
  • Chennai- 6 million
  • Bangalore-5 million
  • Hyderabad-5million
  • Ahmadabad- 3.7 million

Indian population in terms of its diverse range of ethnic groups is classified as:
  • Indo-Aryan 72%
  • Dravidian 25%
  • Mongoloid 2%

Indian population in terms of its diverse range of religious groups is classified as:
  • Hindu- 81.3%
  • Muslim- 12%
  • Christian- 2.3%
  • Sikh- 1.9%
  • Tribals-8%
  • Others including Buddhists, Jains, Parsis- 2.5%.

65% of the Indian population falls under the literary group. The literacy rate of the female population of India is estimated to be 53.7% whereas of men it is estimated to be 75.3% Kerala holds the highest literate population amongst the other states of India. It is estimated to be 91%. Bihar has been estimated as the state with lowest literate population that is 47%, approximately.
