Almost every country around the world has terrestrial and marine protected areas. Terrestrial protected areas can be defined as partially or totally protected areas. These areas, which are of around 1,000 hectares and designated as scientific reserves by national authorities, have limited public access. Meanwhile, marine protected areas are those that have intertidal or subtidal terrain–and overlying water and associated flora and fauna, and historical and cultural features.

These are the areas that have been reserved by law to protect either a part or the whole of the enclosed environment. In fact, these protected areas are a means of conserving biodiversity.

According to the World Bank data, as of 2014, terrestrial and marine protected areas covered some 12.8 percent of the total land surface. When comparing countries or territories, Monaco, and the French territory of New Caledonia, had the largest expanse of terrestrial and marine protected areas. According to the data, terrestrial and marine protected areas formed 99.7 and 91 percent of the total land area in Monaco and New Caledonia respectively.

In Slovenia, Bhutan, Liechtenstein, and Hong Kong, the terrestrial and marine protected areas covered 54, 47.3, 44.3 and 41.8 percent of the total land area. Countries where between 20-to-40 percent of the area comprised terrestrial and marine protected areas in 2014 were Germany, Venezuela, Luxembourg, Congo, Poland, Austria, Australia, Nepal, France and many other nations.

China, India, the United States, Canada, United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Spain, etc., had between 1-to-20 percent of terrestrial and marine protected areas, while Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Malta, Turkey and many others had less than 1 percent.
