The influence of the ISIS, one of the deadliest terrorist organizations in the world, may be on the wane due to successful military operations launched against it by the United States and its allies but that in no way has impacted the global spread of terrorism. Though the impact of terrorism may be severe in some parts of the world but on the whole, every continent has experienced terror incidents. The most recent is the Manchester bombing that took place at a concert in the United Kingdom in May 2017 leading to the deaths of 22 people.

To systematically rank the nations according to terrorist activity, the Institute for Economics and Peace releases the Global Terrorism Index. The index has four indicators – total number of terrorist incidents, injuries, fatalities and property damage. Countries have been ranked on a score of 1 to 10. Countries with scores of 10 are the worst affected while those with 1 the least.

According to the 2016 Global Terrorism Index, Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Pakistan and Syria were the five nations which were highly impacted from terrorism in 2015. These five countries put together accounted for some 72 percent of all deaths from terrorism-related incidents. Of these, Iraq was the most affected with a score of 9.96 out of 10. Afghanistan and Nigeria, which were the second and third most affected nations had scores of 9.444 and 9.314.

Along with Pakistan and Syria, the other nations which had scores ranging between 7 and 9 were Yemen, Somalia, India, Egypt, Libya, Ukraine, the Philippines, and Cameroon. Nations with scores between 5 and 7 were the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Russia, France, Colombia, Bangladesh, Sudan etc.

Nations such as Tunisia, the United States, Sweden, Iran, South Africa, Ireland, Greece, and a few other nations did witness some terrorism-related incidents but were better off than the ones mentioned above. In these nations the scores ranged between 3 and 5.

Countries that were least affected by terrorism and had scores of less than 1 were Morocco, the Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan, Iceland, New Zealand, Singapore, Vietnam among others.
