Cocos (Keeling) Islands is an archipelago of twenty-seven coral islands on the Indian Ocean. These islands were discovered by Captain William Keeling in 1609. The archipelago was occupied by the United Kingdom in 1857 and was handed over to the Australian authorities in 1955.
