Australia is the smallest continent in the world. It is also known as Meganesia, Australinea, and Sahul. It is made up of the Australian mainland, East Timor, Papua New Guinea, and parts of Indonesia. The bordering nations of Australian mainland are Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and East Timor to the north, New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu in the northeast, and New Zealand in the southeast.

Before European settlers arrived in the 18th century, the continent was occupied by aboriginal tribes for approximately 40,000 years. The continent houses the 13th biggest economy in the world. The continent is home to the Commonwealth of Australia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and parts of Indonesia.

The continent is located entirely in the southern hemisphere. It is a member of the United Nations. The flags of Australia rightly signify the colonial background of the continent and its constituent nations.

Australia

Australia is the sixth largest country in the world. The capital of the nation is Canberra. The national flag of Australia has a blue background with the British Union Jack in the upper left corner of the flag. There is a big seven-point star (Commonwealth Star) in white just beneath the Union Jack and five stars (four big and one small) stars on the right quadrant of the flag. These stars are collectively known as the Southern Cross Constellation. The variant of this ensign is also used in the country, which has the same design but the background is red instead of blue. The country is made up of six states and two territories and the details of their flags are given below:

New South Wales

New South Wales is the most populated state in Australia. The capital is Sydney. The flag is similar to the British blue flag with the official emblem of the state placed in the fly. The emblem is a white circle with St. George’s Cross. In the middle, there is a lion in golden color in walking position with right foreleg raised, looking forward. There is an eight-point star in yellow on every branch of the cross.

Queensland

Frequently called as the Sunshine State, the capital of Queensland is Brisbane. The flag of Queensland is a British blue flag with the official emblem of the state on a white circle placed on the right quadrant of the ensign. The official emblem is a Maltese Cross in light blue color with a regal tiara in the middle of the cross.

South Australia

South Australia is the fourth largest state in Australia. The capital of SA is Adelaide. The state flag of South Australia is a British flag with blue background with the official emblem placed in the fly. The official emblem is a yellow circle with a piping shrike bird with its wings spread out.

Tasmania

Tasmania is an island state of Australia. The capital of Tasmania is Hobart. The state flag of Tasmania is a British flag with a blue field and the emblem of the state positioned on the right quadrant of the flag. The emblem is a white circle with a red lion in walking position with raised right foreleg in the middle of the circle.

Victoria

Victoria is the second most populated state in the country. The capital of Victoria is Melbourne. The state ensign of Victoria is a British flag with a blue base with the insignia of the state placed in the fly. The insignia is the Southern Cross Constellation under the royal tiara, which is presently known as the St. Edward’s Crown. The stars can have either five points or eight points.

Western Australia

Western Australia is the biggest state in the country. The capital of WA is Perth. The state flag of Western Australia is a British flag with blue background and the emblem is placed on the right quarter of the flag. The insignia is a yellow circle with an indigenous black swan in the middle. The bird looks to the mast side of the flag.

The Northern Territory

The Northern Territory is an administrative territory of the country. The capital of the territory is Darwin. The ensign of the Northern Territory does not feature the British flag as is the case for other states of Australia. The flag features two perpendicular bands of black (on the left side) and ochre (on the right side) in 1:2 proportion. The black band is defaced with the Southern Cross and the ochre band is defaced with a Sturt’s Desert Rose, which is the official flower of the state.

The Australian Capital Territory serves as the capital province of the Australian Commonwealth. The capital is Canberra. The flag of the Australian Capital Territory has similarities with the ensign of the Northern Territory. The flag features two upright stripes of blue and gold in 1:2 ratio. The blue stripe on the left is defaced with the Southern Cross and the golden stripe on the right is defaced with the official emblem of Canberra.

Papua New Guinea

The Independent State of Papua New Guinea is a nation in Oceania. The capital of Papua New Guinea is Port Moresby. The official flag of Papua New Guinea features two triangles in black and red diagonally placed to each other. The Southern Cross is placed on the black portion of the flag and a bird of paradise in yellow is placed on the red portion of the flag.

East Timor

Also known as the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, East Timor is a country in Southeast Asia. The capital of East Timor is Dili. The official flag of East Timor is rectangular shaped with a red background and two isosceles triangles to the hoist side, the foundations of which overlie. The black triangle is smaller than the yellow triangle and there is a five pointed star in the middle of the black triangle.
