On September 25, 2017, an independence referendum for Iraqi Kurdistan was held. 2,861,471 voters or approximately 93 percent of the people who voted were in favor of the independence of Kurdistan from Iraq. Meanwhile, 7 percent of the voters, or 224,464, opted to remain in Iraq. The demands for a referendum in Kurdistan had been going on for several years and the original one was planned in 2014. However, it got delayed as the Kurdish forces were cooperating with the Iraqi troops to push out the ISIS from Mosul. However, the government of Iraq has rejected the legality of the Kurdistan referendum.
