The Catalan Independence Referendum was held on October 1, 2017, to decide whether Catalonia wanted to break away from Spain or remain with the country. The referendum, which was declared illegal by the Spanish government, was marred by violence as the Spanish police used force to stop voters from going to the polling stations. Despite this, around 2.2 million people of the 5.3 million registered voters were able to vote in the referendum. Of these, 90 percent backed independence of Catalonia from Spain.
