The 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP 21, was held in Paris from November 30 to December 11. This is the 21st yearly session of the Conference of the Parties to the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It is also the 11th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. Governments of more than 190 nations gathered in Paris to discuss the contours of a new global agreement on climate change, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and warding off the threat of dangerous climate change. The ongoing commitments on greenhouse gas emissions will run out in 2020. Therefore, governments in Paris may produce an agreement on the crucial roadmap for at least one decade ahead. Scientists say that if greenhouse emissions continue to increase, we will pass a critical threshold after which global warming will assume catastrophic and irreversible proportions. The generally agreed threshold is a two degree Celsius rise in temperature above pre-industrial levels. Though scientists have warned of global warming for several decades, it is only in the last 20 years or so that measurements establishing a relationship between carbon levels and temperatures have been made.
