Alberto Nisman, a high-profile Argentine prosecutor, was found dead at a luxury Buenos Aires apartment on January 18. A handgun was found near him and he had a bullet wound on the temple. His death shocked Argentines and came days before he was set to release a report that would condemn the government. Allegations immediately surfaced that this was a murder — and not a suicide. The 51-year-old special prosecutor was giving the final touches to the damning report, accusing the Argentine government of a cover-up in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish centre that killed 85 people. Nisman had reportedly traced the suicide bombing plot to Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. Days before his death, he had levelled serious accusations against senior Argentine officials, including the then President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. These included a conspiracy with Iran to cover up the responsibility for the Jewish centre attack. Nisman took over the Jewish centre bombing probe 10 years ago and was chosen to head the investigation by the then president Nestor Kirchner, the late husband of Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.
