The vessel capsized in Hundreds of people drowned after a boat overloaded with migrants capsized in the Mediterranean Sea on April 18 the Libyan waters south of Lampedusa, an Italian island. About 30 people were rescued. The accident happened after the people on the boat saw a merchant ship and tried to attract its attention. This over-balanced the vessel and it sank. “They wanted to be rescued. They saw another ship,” a spokeswoman for UNHCR said: “They were trying to make themselves known to it.” Italian naval and coastguard ships and three helicopters took part in the rescue operation, 130 miles from the coast of Lampedusa. The UN refugee agency UNHCR said this could be the single largest loss of lives during a migrant crossing into Europe. Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said it was “unthinkable” that in the face of such a tragedy ‘there isn't the feeling of solidarity which Europe has shown in other instances”.
