On 30 June, a C-130 Hercules aircraft of the Indonesian Air Force with 12 crew and 109 passengers on board crashed near a residential neighborhood after taking off from Medan, Indonesia, killing all 121 people on board and 22 people on the ground. The plane was transporting mostly military personnel and their families and was heading to Tanjung Pinang. The plane had just taken off when it ran into trouble. It hit two houses and a hotel and burst into huge flames. Thousands of residents searched for survivors from the wreckage. Identification of the victims was started on July 1. The bodies were taken to Adam Malik Hospital in Medan for identification. Some reports indicated that mechanical failure may have been a cause of the crash. In September 2005, a Boeing 737 had crashed into a residential area after take-off from Medan’s Polonia airport, killing more than 100 people.
