1,453 worshipers killed in stampede near Mecca

The Hajj stampede that took place near the holy city of Mecca is one of the deadliest recorded incidents during Hajj. As per media reports, around 1,453 people were killed in the incident that took place near Mina, a religious site outside the holy city of Mecca. This figure is much higher than the one released by Saudi authorities, which put the death toll at 769. The tragic incident sparked a diplomatic row between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Iran, which lost 465 citizens in the tragedy, blamed Saudi Arabia for failing to protect worshipers. Egypt lost 148 people, the second highest casualty, followed by Indonesia at 120.
