The Berlin wall was constructed by German Democratic Republic (GDR) with an intention to completely separate West Berlin from the neighboring East Germany and East Berlin. During the period of the Cold War, several East Germans escaped to the democratic West and hence in order to safeguard its population from the fundamentals of fascist that apparently stood as an obstacle in making East Germany a socialist state, the Eastern Bloc constructed the wall.

After a series of rapid political changes in Eastern Bloc and many weeks of civil unrest, the East German government granted permission to all GDR citizens to visit West Berlin and West Germany. The uproar that ensued over the next few weeks led the government to remove the wall. This fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989 eventually led to the German reunification.

On 9 November 2014, Germany will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. It is a defining day in the history of Germany as it marks Germany’s reunification. To commemorate this historic year various events and exhibitions have been planned across the length and breadth of Berlin. The anniversary events will center on the Cold War, the separation of Berlin and Germany and the reunification (1989-90). Comprehensively, the events will have its focus on the significance of the wall and its impact on Berlin, giving a flashback to that historical occurrence.

The most striking event will take place during the weekend of November 9. Thousands of illuminated white balloons will be lined up along the former Berlin Wall and will run through the city center. If the weather permits this temporary wall of while balloons can also be seen from space. Other events that will be an added perk to the commemoration are trip to the watchtowers, cycling tours along Wall, visit to the East Side Gallery and a trip around the former East Berlin, etc. Visitors will be permitted to take a stroll along the Wall to visualize the massiveness of the division that had taken place.
