On Wednesday July 4, 2012, scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) revealed in a convention in Geneva that they now have evidence of a subatomic particle, referred to as the God Particle, which provides all other particles their mass and size. The existence of this particle has been long theorized but the particle physicists at CERN confirmed that they now have proof of its existence in July 2012. This discovery has been hailed as the biggest scientific breakthrough of our times.

The CERN says that the God Particle is consistent with and may well be the Higgs Boson. The Higgs Boson is the particle that set off the cosmic explosion resulting in the creation of Earth and life. The teams working on the discovery at CERN believe that the discovery has been made with a 5 – sigma certainty making the error ratio 1 in 35 million. The existence of the Higgs Boson particle was first postulated by scientist Peter Higgs of Scotland's University of Edinburgh in 1964. While most of the world is still trying to understand the Higgs Boson, particle physicists are ready to look ahead and predict the implications of the discovery in the world of research.

In trying to understand the Higgs Boson, scientists say it is a tiny subatomic particle that weighs approximately 130 times an atom of hydrogen - the lightest known gas. The particle interacts with other subatomic particles and slows them down. By slowing them down, the particle gives matter its mass which in turn provides inertia. Physicists believe that electromagnetic and nuclear forces do not need particles with mass to function. The fact that particles do indeed have mass, then, points to the existence of the Higgs Boson. To prove its existence, two teams of researchers collected data in separate experiments that smashed millions of subatomic particles, the protons in the Large Hadron Collider. The results of these smash-ups fell through in ways predicted by Higgs and other physicists.
