On December 14, 2012, an armed gunman, Adam Lanza, shot and wounded two, and killed twenty children and six adult staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, US. The school is in the Sandy Hook village and is an elementary school. 20 Year-old Adam Lanza shot and killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, at their Newtown home before driving to school in her car. After going out on the mass massacre, Lanza committed suicide by shooting himself in the head before the first responders arrived on the scene. The incident is the second-deadliest school shooting in the history of the United States, following the Virginia Tech massacre of 2007. It also recorded as the second-deadliest mass murder in a US elementary school; the deadliest was the Bath School bombings of 1927.

The incident caused much grief to the community and elicited reaction from across the globe. In the US, the incident sparked of a renewed debate about gun control legislation in the country. President Barack Obama in his televised address the next day said, "We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics”. At the White House and other federal government facilities in the US and across the world, flags were flown at half-mast in honor of the victims. Many candle light vigils and interfaith prayer sessions were held across the country.
