United States "at the mercy of events" in world, says Romney

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney slammed President Barack Obama's handling of foreign policy on Thursday after four Americans were killed in Libya, stating the United States seems to be at the mercy of world events.

Romney made the comments at a campaign rally in Virgina and urged for a stronger U.S. military.

"As we watch the world today, sometimes it seems that we're at the mercy of events, instead of shaping events," he said in Fairfax.

Romney has come under fire from Democrats as well as from members within his own party for criticizing the Obama administration's response to demonstrators at American diplomatic missions in Libya's Benghazi city and Cairo.

On Wednesday, Romney condemned the U.S. Embassy in Cairo for criticizing an anti-Islam film that led to protests outside the embassy.

In Benghazi, the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed after demonstrators attacked the consulate in protest of the film.

According to political pundits, Romney was hasty to utilize the incident as a campaign tool ahead of the November 6 elections.

Romney accused Obama of making heavy cuts in the defence budget set to come into effect at the end of the year unless the president is able to negotiate a budget deal with Congress.

"A strong America is essential to shape events. And a strong America, by the way, depends on a strong military. We have to have a military second to none and that's so strong no one would ever think of testing it," he said.
