2016 Presidential Election

US Election Updates - September 2, 2012

Romney to focus on debates next week

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is to take time off the campaign trail next week in order to prepare for the televised debates this fall against Democratic rival President Barack Obama.

Senior Romney campaign adviser Kevin Madden said the former Massachusetts governor is to spend Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday on debate preparation at the home of Kerry Healey in Reading, Vermont.

Healey was the lieutenant governor of Massachusetts while Romney was governor of the state.

Madden did not confirm whether Romney would campaign during the week of the Democratic National Convention, which takes place from Tuesday to Thursday in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Romney formally accepted the Republican presidential nomination earlier this week in Tampa, Florida.

The three televised debates are set to take place on October 3, 16 and 22 and will be crucial for both candidates.

Republican Senator Rob Portman of Ohio is to stand in for Obama during Romney's debate preparation while Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts will play Romney for Obama's preparation.
