Romney supporter defends Florida fundraising event

Marc Leder, the co-chief executive of private equity firm Sun Capital Partners who hosted a donor fundraiser in May in which Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney criticized supporters of President Barack Obama, said on Tuesday he supported people from both political parties.

"I hosted a fundraiser for an old friend in May," Leder said in a statement provided by his spokesman.

"I believe all Americans should have the opportunity to succeed, to improve their lives, and to build even better lives for their children. I have supported people from both political parties who share this view and make it a priority, even though their ideas on how to achieve it may differ."

Two clips from a secretly filmed video were released this week showing Romney making off-the-cuff remarks over Obama’s supporters and his views on the Middle East.

The first, released on Monday, shows Romney dismissing Obama’s supporters as people who live off government handouts.

The second clip, which was released on Tuesday, sees Romney telling donors the Palestinians are "committed to the destruction and elimination of Israel" and that the Middle East will "remain an unsolved problem”.

Both clips were posted online by the liberal Mother Jones magazine.
