Romney dishonest on abortion, says Obama camp

The Obama campaign slammed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s recent comments on abortion on Wednesday, citing them as examples of dishonesty and deception.

On Tuesday, Romney told the Des Moines Register "there's no legislation with regards to abortion that I'm familiar with that would become part of my agenda."

Shortly after, the National Review quoted Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul as saying: "Governor Romney would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life."

CNN later reported her saying: "Mitt Romney is proudly pro-life, and he will be a pro-life president.” This led to a barrage of criticism from President Barack Obama’s campaign.

"We saw proof of Romney's dishonesty yesterday when he didn't tell the truth about his extreme position on abortion and then got fact checked by his own campaign," said Stephanie Cutter, Obama’s deputy campaign manager. "He's trying to hide his real position, but there's no hiding when you're president."

Abortion is a tricky issue for Romney. Republicans have repeatedly fought to overturn the 1973 Supreme Court Roe v. Wade ruling which legalizes abortion, while Democrats have protected it.

During the Republican primaries, Romney’s rivals raised doubts over his commitment over the procedure as he supported keeping abortion legal when he ran for Massachusetts governor in 2002.
