2016 Presidential Election

US Election Updates - August 29, 2012

Republicans nominate Romney

Republicans nominated Mitt Romney on Tuesday to take on President Barack Obama in the November 6 polls as they kicked off their storm-delayed convention.

Opinion polls suggest Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan are at par or slightly behind his Democratic rival.

The convention's opening was pushed back a day due to a storm threat. However, Republicans wasted no time criticizing Obama's economic record.

Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, reminded voters that re-electing Obama would mean "four more years of failure."

"We have a message for America: Elect Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan and they'll get America working again," he said. "We must send America's comeback team to Washington."

The convention will culminate with Romney's nationally televised acceptance speech on Thursday.
